Rummikub Introduction

What is Rummikub?

Rummikub is a tile-based game for 2 to 4 players that combines elements of the card game rummy and mahjong. The game consists of 106 tiles, including 104 number tiles (valued 1 to 13 in four different colors, two copies of each) and two joker tiles.

The objective of Rummikub is simple: be the first player to use all the tiles from your rack by forming them into valid sets and runs on the table.

Game Components

  • 104 number tiles - Numbers 1 to 13 in four colors (black, red, blue, and yellow), with two copies of each
  • 2 joker tiles - Wild tiles that can represent any number and color
  • 4 tile racks - To hold each player's tiles
  • Game board (optional) - Some versions include a playing surface

The game is compact and portable, making it perfect for family game nights, travel, or casual play with friends.

Basic Concepts

Sets

A set consists of three or four tiles of the same number but different colors. For example:

Red 7, Blue 7, Black 7 (a set of three 7s)

Red 4, Blue 4, Yellow 4, Black 4 (a set of four 4s)

Runs

A run consists of three or more consecutive numbers all in the same color. For example:

Blue 3, Blue 4, Blue 5 (a run of three blue tiles)

Red 8, Red 9, Red 10, Red 11, Red 12 (a run of five red tiles)

Jokers

Jokers are wild tiles that can be used to represent any tile in a set or run. However, they can be "stolen" by other players if they have the exact tile the joker represents and can use it in a new or existing set or run.

Getting Started

Rummikub is easy to learn but offers deep strategic gameplay. Here's how to get started:

  1. Each player draws 14 tiles and places them on their rack
  2. Players take turns trying to place tiles on the table in valid sets and runs
  3. To make your first move, you must place tiles with a total value of at least 30 points
  4. After your initial meld, you can add to existing sets and runs or create new ones
  5. If you cannot play, you must draw one tile from the pool
  6. The first player to use all their tiles wins!
